Service Opportunities
Why is service important? So many organizations around the world ceaselessly serve humanity. One can serve in countless ways donating talents, time, or finances. Selfless service is an integral part of our own transformational process especially as we grow as young leaders. Her Holiness Sai Maa describes selfless service as “Love ...put into practice with no expectations”. At its core, service helps us to cultivate love and understanding for others and in the process it opens us up to fully experience the glory of life.
Previous service projects and conferences AWAKE has been involved with:
- Thailand Conference:
- International Interfaith Congress in Kashi, India:
In November 2006, three youth from AWAKE presented speeches at the International Interfaith Congress organized by H.H. Sai Maa, HIU and Mahatma Gandhi Vidyapith University. This congress gathered professors, politicians and peace advocates from around India and the world to share how we can manifest a world in which all faiths, spiritual beliefs, cultures and races are honored and celebrated.
- Service Projects in India:
In the winter of 2007, fifteen youth traveled throughout India (Kashi, Bangalore, and Calicut), serving in humanitarian projects distributing vitamins and anti-parasite medication to school children, distributing food rations to rural families, offering pensions to widows, and serving free meals to thousands of people.
- Student Peace Alliance National Conference:
(when???)AWAKE sponsored two young people to attend the first ever Student Peace Alliance Conference, which brought together 300 student and youth leaders from around the country to build and define the national youth movement for a U.S. Department of Peace.
Projects AWAKE is currently organizing:
- Washington D.C. Senate and House Youth Programs
- The chaplains of the US Capitol express that the young people working within the offices of the Congress truly hold the ideals and principles of the United States of America. AWAKE is getting involved in programs in the House and Senate for youth to aid in creating a US Capitol filled with Light, Love, and Compassion.
- HIV/ AIDS Service Project in Chicago and Indianapolis- Summer 2008
- This summer AWAKE as well as the HIU community will be providing HIV/AIDS testing and other services in conjunction with the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Indianapolis and the Mother’s House in Chicago. All are welcome to come and serve!
- Selfless Service Trip in 2009 - It is with great joy and enthusiasm that we are organizing a selfless service trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in collaboration with Rediscovery Four Corners. The trip will include cultural sharing with the residents of the Reservation as well as service in the community.
If you would like to participate or help organize one of these projects, please contact Rachael Dalsing at radalsin@yahoo.com.
