Mantra Recitation

The Vedic tradition of India recognizes the existence of an impersonal God and a personal God.  The Impersonal God, Brahman or pure consciousness is present in every aspect of creation.  There is no place, no object or person where pure consciousness does not exist.  Everything we perceive with our senses is an expression of pure consciousness.

However, the abstract concept of an "all present," "non-local" God is often difficult for many people to relate to and hence the idea of a personal, localized manifestation of God has arisen.  In the Vedic tradition, we see this represented as the numerous gods and goddesses.  However, even though each deity has his or her own attributes (wisdom, beauty, abundance, protection, etc.), they are all nothing other than expressions of the same Divine presence.  As we ourselves, are also reflections of this Divine presence, these gods and goddesses are really expressions of the archetypal energies ever present within our own collective consciousness.

Everything in the manifest universe is, at its deepest level, sound or vibration.  The whole cosmos results from the original Primordial Sound, diversifying and unfolding in an infinite number of sequences to manifest as the symphony of creation we experience around us.  Whenever there is a break, disharmony or distortion in any of these sequences, the result is a challenge, disharmony or lack in some area of our life.  This can be remedied by reintroducing the correct vibration into that area.

Mantras are sounds or vibrations with known effects.  Therefore, by chanting a specific mantra we can create a resonance in our physiology to correct some lack or disharmony in our life.  Chanting the mantra associated with a particular Vedic deity is therefore a way of enlivening these archetypal energies, lying dormant within us, and invoking the particular attributes to create balance and wholeness.

Below are listed several mantras that Sai Maa has recommended that we repeat daily.  They can be repeated aloud, silently while moving tongue and lips, or mentally.  Sai Maa has suggested that we repeat each 16 or 108 times.  You can keep track of the number using a mala (or rosary).  It is recommended that we start by invoking Lord Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles, and end with: OM, Shanti Shanti Shanti.

  • To Lord Ganesha:  Om Gam Glum Namaha
  • To Mother Gayatri:  Om Bhur Bhuvah Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi, Dhiyo Yo Yah Prachodayat
  • To Mother Saraswati:   Om Aim Saraswatiya Namaha
  • To Mother Lakshmi:   Om Shrim Maha Lakshmiyei Namaha
  • To Mother Durga:   Om Dum Maha Durgayei Namaha
  • To Mother Kali:   Om Klim Kalikayei Namaha
