Chakras and Subtle Bodies

God Is Walking With You

Beloveds,

"Remember, God is walking with you, holding you, supporting you. The love is with you. The grace is with you. Visualize God the way you choose. Personify God, if you choose, and create a relationship, create life with the Divine One. God is around you, above, below, on the sides; there is no place where God is not—Omnipresence of God. You are never alone. You cannot be alone. You are strong." - Sai Maa

Energy Centers of Transformation

If our understanding is that consciousness is primary and matter is secondary, then consciousness, the Divine, is transforming itself into matter at every point in the universe.  However, at certain points, this transformation is more intense, more active.  On the planet we refer to such a point as a vortex. On the human body, they are called Chakras.  The word Chakras literally means wheel, so a Chakra is where the Unmanifest spins itself into the manifest.  There are many Chakras in the human body but we usually focus on the seven major ones, located along the spine.  Each Chakra has its own qualities which influence our physical and emotional well-being.  Past karmas relating to those qualities are also stored at the level of the Chakras.  In an Enlightened body, the Chakras spin freely, allowing for an effortless process of transformation and the unimpeded flow of energy throughout the body.  However, for most of us, there are blockages in these areas leading to a loss of Wholeness in the quality of life.

Surrounding the physical body are the layers of subtle bodies, often collectively referred to as the aura.  These subtle bodies completely mirror the physical body, and everything we experience in the physical body is first experienced in the subtle body.  By keeping the subtle bodies perfectly aligned with the physical body, we can maintain balance and harmony in life.  The subtle bodies also act as a kind of protective shield to the physical body, so keeping them strong and healthy is important to our well-being.

Running through all of this is a network of energy channels, known in Ayurveda as nadis.  According to Ayurveda, we have 72,000 nadis in our physiology.  The nadis radiate out from the Chakras, acting as the lines of communication to all parts of our physiology.  Keeping these channels clear is important to the free flow of energy and information throughout the physiology.  There are three major nadis in the body.  The Ida Nadi is on the left side of the spine.  It is cooling, feminine and purifying.  The Pingala Nadi runs along the right side of the spine.  It is heating, masculine and cleansing in the way fire cleanses.  Balance between these two nadis creates balance in our lives.  The Sushumna Nadi is located in the center of the spine and is the channel through which the spiritual energy or Kundalini Shakti will eventually rise from the Root Chakra at the base of the spine to the Crown Chakra, opening the door to Freedom.

Exercises for Purifying and Balancing the Energy Centers

The most powerful way to purify and balance the energy centers of the physical body is through the process of Brain Illumination.  Use the breath to draw Divine Light from the Higher Self, down through the Crown Chakra on the top of the head to illumine the brain and then expand the Light into all the Chakras.  Continue expanding the Light through all the Nadi channels, filling the entire system with Pure Divine Light.  We can purify and strengthen the subtle bodies by expanding the Light beyond the physical body, filling the aura and surrounding ourselves with a halo of Light.

The physical and subtle bodies can be easily aligned with a simple yet very effective centering technique.  Raise one hand above you, arm and fingers straight, palm facing inwards.  Hold the other hand at the navel, again with fingers pointing upwards and palms facing inwards.  Take a breath in and, as you exhale, bring both palms together in prayer position in front of your heart center.  Repeat this three times first thing in the morning and any time you feel a little out of balance during the day.

Yogic exercises are also good for opening blockages in the Chakras, particularly asanas which stretch and twist the spine.  Other movement such as dancing and shaking the body to fast drumming music is also beneficial.

Balancing the Ida and Pingala nadis and aligning the right and left hemispheres of the brain is achieved by the yogic breathing exercise known as Nadi Shodhana or alternative nostril breathing.  Close one nostril and inhale and exhale through the other, then switch nostrils and repeat.  Continue like this for 2-3 minutes allowing the breath to flow at its own pace.

Each of the Chakras has its own sound.  Chanting each of these sounds three times daily, with attention in the appropriate Chakra, will have a purifying effect.  The following chart gives the Sanskrit name, location along the spine, basic qualities and sound for each of the main Chakras.

Sanskrit Name Location on the Spine  Basic Qualities  Sound
Muladhara Base of spine Sense of survival LAM
Swadhisthana Behind pubic bone Sensuality VAM
Manipura Navel  Ego, personal power  RAM
Anahata  Heart center  Tenderness, compassion  YAM
Vishuddha  Throat  Self-Mastery, creativity  HAM
Ajna  Between eyebrows  Insight, intuition  OM
Sahasrara  Top of head  Union, Oneness  GAM

The Garden
by Michelle Riemer

Find the place for me
There clothed in Light
I shall reside in Truth
Leaving here, contortions and twistings
To spread my wings in freedom
With Heart wide open
No shield is held in the hand of Love
Where is this field of death
Captured in ignorant flesh
Tethered by fear and mourning in selfishness
I have risen from here as a healing balm
Blazing as an ocean of purifying Fire
In the sacred ashes
The spirit seeds of Unity are sprouting
Fresh and golden in the sun
With Mother tending the garden

Recipe of the Month

Seven Chakra Salad

This is a recipe to nourish the body and activate Higher Consciousness.  By including a wide range of colorful foods, the body receives a number of essential components for health.  If you like, you can also chant the sounds for each chakra listed above while preparing the salad in order to raise the vibration of your food.

Spring salad greens
Cherry tomatoes
Orange bell pepper strips
Coin-sized sliced carrots
Fresh corn kernels, cooked and cut from the cobb
Sunflower sprouts
Avocado chunks
Fresh blueberries
Thinly-sliced and chopped red cabbage
Golden raisins

Raspberry Vinaigrette:

For this salad, a dressing with a touch of sweetness is perfect to accent the fruit it contains.  Here is one suggestion.

1 pint fresh raspberries, thawed
¼ c organic extra-virgin olive oil
½ c orange juice
1 Tbs white miso
1 green onion, chopped to the top
2-4 tsp savory, marjoram or thyme
Pinch sun-dried sea salt, or to taste.

In blender, blend all ingredients until smooth. Store in a glass jar with a lid in the refrigerator.
